Professor Vladyslav Vyazovskiy, a renowned expert in sleep physiology and Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics (DPAG), has been appointed as the Vice President (Basic) of the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS). The announcement was made during the ESRS Business Meeting at Sleep Europe 2022, a significant conference that brings together sleep researchers and clinicians from across the continent.
Advancing the Science of Sleep
Professor Vyazovskiy and his research group have made pivotal contributions to understanding the neurophysiological mechanisms that regulate sleep. Their work has shed light on the fundamental functions of sleep and its impact on overall health. In a landmark study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in late 2021, his team discovered that the hypothalamus is crucial in controlling the qualitative aspects of wakefulness and sleep.
This research challenged traditional views by suggesting that it is not just the duration of wakefulness that influences the accumulation of sleep pressure and the likelihood of transitioning between sleep states. Instead, the "intensity" or "quality" of wakefulness plays a significant role. Based on these findings, the team proposed an innovative concept known as the "switch with a spring" model, offering new insights into how sleep need is regulated.
A Vision for the Future
Upon his appointment, Professor Vyazovskiy expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to the Society:
"I was absolutely delighted to be elected as Vice President. This year, we are celebrating 50 years of the Society, which was founded back in 1972. The ESRS has been instrumental in bringing together basic sleep researchers and clinicians, providing a much-needed platform for sharing knowledge and promoting sleep research and sleep medicine in Europe and around the world. I look forward to working with the ESRS Board and the wider community to contribute to the success of our Society."
About the European Sleep Research Society
The ESRS is an international, non-profit scientific organization dedicated to promoting research on sleep and related areas. Its mission includes improving patient care for sleep disorders and facilitating the dissemination of information in sleep research and medicine. In honor of its 50th anniversary, the Journal of Sleep Research has published an article titled "The European Sleep Research Society – past, present and future," highlighting the Society's achievements and future goals.
