UK Researchers Gain Expanded Access to Horizon Europe Funding

In a significant development for the UK's research landscape, EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is visiting London to mark the expanded access of UK researchers and businesses to Horizon Europe funding, particularly in the fields of quantum and space research. This initiative is poised to stimulate economic growth and aligns seamlessly with the UK's strategic Plan for Change.

Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Minister for EU Relations, is hosting Commissioner Šefčovič on his inaugural official visit to the UK under the current administration. This visit follows recent dialogues with European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and sets the stage for the forthcoming UK-EU Summit.

The broadened access to Horizon Europe funding is part of the newly unveiled 2025 Horizon Europe Work Programme. This programme opens doors for UK scientists and businesses to engage in international collaborations within pioneering sectors such as quantum and space technologies.

Importance of Horizon Europe Funding

Horizon Europe stands as the world's largest research collaboration programme, boasting a budget of approximately £80 billion. It offers a substantial boost to the UK’s quantum and space sectors, which are pivotal for future economic expansion. Quantum computing alone is projected to generate between $5-10 billion globally in the near future, while the UK is a leader in private space investment outside the United States.

During Commissioner Šefčovič’s visit, he and Minister Thomas-Symonds are scheduled to meet with professors at Imperial College London who have reaped the benefits of Horizon funding. The visit also includes discussions with key government officials to explore ongoing UK-EU relations.

Opportunities for UK Innovators

UK Science Minister Lord Vallance highlights the expanding opportunities for British researchers and businesses in the quantum and space sectors. Horizon Europe provides a platform for forging international connections and advancing research, which is crucial for addressing global challenges and driving economic growth.

Since the UK's association with Horizon in 2024, British experts have gained access to the majority of funding calls, with recent enhancements broadening opportunities in space and quantum. This includes comprehensive access to all quantum funding calls and the ability to form consortia with European and international partners.

Impact on the UK Economy

The Horizon Europe programme acts as a catalyst for innovation, fostering collaborations between the UK and Europe’s leading minds. This partnership is vital for achieving the UK Government’s objectives in science and technology, including economic growth, healthcare advancements, and clean energy initiatives.

The UK space sector currently employs 52,000 individuals and generates £18.9 billion annually. Innovations in quantum computing are driving progress across various industries, from healthcare to logistics. Continued access to Horizon funding supports these high-potential sectors.

Future Prospects and Calls to Action

With new Horizon funding calls on the horizon, UK businesses and researchers are urged to capitalize on these opportunities. Upcoming calls for space and industry projects are set to commence on 22 May, followed by digital calls on 10 June.

To enhance participation, the UK government has extended substantial support to the R&D community, including funding initiatives and brokerage visits to encourage collaboration. Resources and guidance are readily available through the Horizon Hub and UK Research and Innovation events.
